Ready to Fight
Bruce Lee was a skilled martial artist, and yet he constantly preached peace. When asked about how he could preach and advocate for that peace while training his students to fight, he responded:
“It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war.”
Preparation and discipline allow one to develop the skill necessary for tough times and tough opponents. In business, sometimes competitors come from surprising places. In investing, sometimes your toughest opponent is yourself. Lack of discipline and lack of emotional control can lead one down a bad path in both war and the markets.
As Bruce Lee’s students learned from him, and he learned from those before him, we can learn from those that have come before us. Markets have gone up and down, and businesses have succeeded and failed for a long time. Successful investing requires learning lessons from the past, and then using the skills one develops to handle the challenges of the present and the future.
The stock market has been in a garden state most of the time since the government and Federal Reserve stepped in heavily during the spring of 2020. Eventually that will change, although no one can predict when it will happen. When it inevitably does, and you are faced with a war of emotions within you and those around you, will you be ready?
“I believe in the discipline of mastering the best that other people have ever figured out. I don’t believe in just sitting down and trying to dream it all up yourself. Nobody’s that smart.” —Charlie Munger
