Networking and Serendipity
“One of the things that I’ve really come to increasingly internalize myself—and it’s a piece of advice that I give to everybody—is to network intensely. This business does require luck. And there’s no better way to maximize your luck than to know as many people as possible” —Dennis Hong [Source: Good Investing Talks]
It is true in most of the business world, and especially true in the investing business, that who you know makes a difference. Whether it is a peer group in which one shares investment ideas, or the investors that allow one to be in business, growing one’s network can make a major difference between success and failure over time.
People are different, and differences in personality can determine what kind of networking tools might be best for you. Maybe the tools in How to Win Friends & Influence People or Never Eat Alone will be effective for you. Maybe you’re more of a The Introvert’s Edge to Networking kind of person. Or maybe you’re some combination of all of those—and more.
You want to expose yourself to positive-Black Swans, as author and flâneur Nassim Taleb has described it. Meeting the right person can make all the difference in one’s life and career. But one rarely knows who that person is going to be ahead of time. Small investments in time along the way have the potential to pay off big one way or the other, even if you can’t predict which of those investments will lead to the right kind of serendipity. As Taleb describes it in The Black Swan:
“Seize any opportunity, or anything that looks like opportunity. They are rare, much rarer than you think. Remember that positive Black Swans have a necessary first step: you need to be exposed to them. Many people do not realize that they are getting a lucky break in life when they get it…. Collect as many free nonlottery tickets (those with open-ended payoffs) as you can, and, once they start paying off, do not discard them. Work hard, not in grunt work, but in chasing such opportunities and maximizing exposure to them. This makes living in big cities invaluable because you increase the odds of serendipitous encounters—you gain exposure to the envelope of serendipity.”
