The Inner Scorecard
“The big question about how people behave is whether they’ve got an Inner Scorecard or an Outer Scorecard. It helps if you can be satisfied with an Inner Scorecard. I always pose it this way. I say: ‘Lookit. Would you rather be the world’s greatest lover, but have everyone think you’re the world’s worst lover? Or would you rather be the world’s worst lover but have everyone think you’re the world’s greatest lover?’” —Warren Buffett
In the age of abundance and social media, few things are more abundant than opinions. There are opinions on viruses and moon landings. There are opinions on the best way to mow your lawn, or the best cheese to bring to a dinner party. And there are opinions on stocks and investment portfolios—your stocks, and your investment portfolio, should you be brave enough to talk about them.
If you want to extraordinary results, you can’t do what everyone else is doing. Straying from the crowd doesn’t guarantee extraordinary, or even good, results. But it gives you a chance to separate from the herd. In his book Richer, Wiser, Happier, author William Green discussed a conversation that he had with investors Mohnish Pabrai and Guy Spier about other people that have lived their lives according to an inner scorecard and forged their own paths:
Pabrai and Spier reeled off a random list of inner-scorecard exemplars: Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Steve Jobs, and leading investors such as Buffett, Munger, Ted Weschler, Li Lu, Bill Miller, and Nick Sleep. Pabrai observed, “All the guys who reached the pinnacle, that’s the only way they got there.”
You want to learn what you can from others and use external sources to help you improve. But be your own judge. Set your own standards. To quote Warren Buffett yet again:
You always want to consider your inner scorecard—how you feel about your own performance and success. You should worry more about how well you perform rather than how well the rest of the world perceives your performance.
