A Hero and a Friend
“Choosing your heroes is very important...because you are going to gravitate toward the behavior of those around you.” —Warren Buffett
Luck can change one’s life. A chance encounter can lead one to find a soulmate. A lucky investment can change one’s financial life forever.
And the good luck of walking into a classroom with the right professor can alter one’s career path, and lead to a lifelong friendship. During our college years, two of the Co/Investor Club team members that write this newsletter had the good fortune of walking into a classroom with Dr. Gerald Boyles, who left this world on May 12th.
The reaction when we met someone that also knew Dr. Boyles was almost always the same—a big smile, and then a story. He was the kind of person that would root with all of his energy for everyone he knew and cared about, and do what he could to offer support and guidance along the way.
After hearing about the birth of a first child, Dr. Boyles sent one of us the following note, which we share here for the benefit of all readers to get one last bit of wisdom from the “Wise Ole Professor”:
Ellen and I consider the births of our two boys the most blessed and joyful times of our lives. I’m sure you guys will too. As the “Wise Ole Professor” I feel l should offer you a bit of advice. The one piece of advice I would offer (not that you guys need any) is to spend as much time with baby boy as possible…. Time has and will continue to slip by so fast. Don’t miss the opportunities to spend time with your son!
Gerald Boyles was one of our heroes, friends, and mentors. And we are better for having been lucky enough to cross his path. Rest in Peace, Dr. Boyles.
