It’s Not Fair
In an article this past week, author and podcaster Ryan Holiday shared some of the best advice he’s heard from those he’s interviewed. One of those pieces of advice came from another popular author and podcaster:
Tim Ferriss advised stripping these three words out of your vocabulary: it’s not fair. Because they are impotent and meaningless. Because they don’t do anything but make you upset.
That’s great advice for investors as well.
Many of the greatest investment track records in history were built by investors who were right only 60% of the time—sometimes even less. You can’t get everything right and, even when you do a lot of work before making an investment, you still can be wrong.
When that happens, it’s easy to think things aren’t fair—that you deserve to make money given the time and effort you put in before investing.
Investing doesn’t work that way. Unexpected things happen, and the price of playing the investing game is that you will sometimes be wrong and make mistakes.
But you can’t dwell on those errors. It’ll affect your emotions and cause you to make more errors, or miss the opportunity you could have seen if you had moved on and moved forward.
“Don’t fear failure.... Don’t let it eat at you. Don’t look back. Just keep going. You’re going to have some things, but forget them. Go forward.” —Warren Buffett
