Doing Nothing
“The inability to do nothing is what most people get tripped up on.” –Tom Russo
Patience is a virtue, usually. This is especially true when it comes to finding and investing in good, great, and growing companies. News—of both the useful and useless varieties—is everywhere. And opinions on every company, informed or not, are easy to find. For example, there were plenty of people that, even after witnessing the success of the iPod, predicted that the iPhone would fail. If you had owned shares of Apple when the iPhone was announced and sold your shares based on those predictions, you’d have missed out on making over 50 times your money. What you should have done, were you lucky enough to own those shares, was nothing.
Doing nothing when there is nothing to do is not easy. It’s tempting to be active. It’s tempting to trade shares for a company you’ve held for years for the new, shiny, exciting company that shows up on T.V. But, as Charlie Munger implies in the quote below, the greatest rewards often come from buying right and sitting tight:
If you buy something because it's undervalued, then you have to think about selling it when it approaches your calculation of its intrinsic value. That's hard. But if you buy a few great companies, then you can sit on your ass. That's a good thing.
We're partial to putting out large amounts of money where we won't have to make another decision.
