Memorial Day is a time to honor America’s heroes and remember that we are the home of the free because of the brave. From our team to yours we wish you a blessed Memorial Day and thank you to all who have served. One of our interns is a student veteran who wrote an impactful story which is shared below.
Lane’s Story
My name is Lane Welborn, I am an intern at Avenel Financial Group and Co/Investor Club. I am currently a student veteran and senior finance major at Coastal Carolina University. This paper is about Memorial Day and why we remember those fallen and the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Whether it be from external combat or combat within the mind, we should remember and acknowledge these brave men and women. My story is to give background and texture as to who I am and the experiences I had while serving. It is intended to be insightful, but not to detract from the real message: Memorial Day. Let us take note to the true meaning of Memorial Day and never forget that we live in the land of the free and home of the brave.

Extreme Ownership
Due to our military theme this week, it is appropriate to share one of our favorite books: Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.
Willink and Babin share stories of their victories and failures as Navy SEALS and apply their experience with various management tactics to the business world. The principles are straightforward but can be extremely difficult to act on. As Jocko would say, “leadership is simple, but not easy.” Extreme ownership is about taking responsibility for all your actions.
Most of the book comes from lessons Jocko and Leif learned during their time in Ramadi, Iraq. Each chapter starts with a story about an event that leads to “principles” later in the chapter. The “principles” are leadership concepts that are used in the “application to business” portion of each chapter, where Jocko and Leif enlighten leaders in the business world through their consulting company Echelon Front.
This book comes with the absolute highest recommendation from our team. At Avenel Financial Group and The Co/Investor Club, we have a Marine Corps veteran and active Air Force member. The lessons taught in this book are necessities for anyone currently in a leadership position. If you would like to learn more about this book and the authors, please visit https://echelonfront.com./

Support our Heroes
The Til Valhalla Project honors fallen heroes by providing special memorial plaques to military families who have lost a loved one and donates to organizations to help reduce veteran suicide. “When you buy from Til Valhalla Project, you are not only preserving the legacies of our fallen, but also saving the lives of those who are currently struggling.” Til Valhalla offers patriotic apparel and merchandise.
The Gary Sinse Foundation honors our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. The foundation gives back through programs they have created to build and support communities. There are currently two chapters across the United States with four different programs that offer outreach and assistance. There are various ways to get involved with the foundation by fundraising, giving, attending events, and just staying connected.
