Win-Win
Most long-term stock market winners come from good businesses that remain good businesses for a long time. Speculative periods occur from time to time but, generally, for a stock to compound at a high rate for many years, you need to find a business that compounds at a high rate for many years. One of the most important qualitative ingredients to finding these enduring businesses is to find a business that operates in a true Win-Win relationship with all its counterparties. As Christopher Begg, Chief Investment Officer at East Coast Asset Management once wrote in an investor letter:
“Win-Win is the only system that is sustainable over the long-term – any fatal flaw with any counterparty will inevitably self-correct. We believe by striving to eliminate Win-Lose, Lose-Win, and Lose-Lose situations we can go far in removing many of the blind spots that those unsustainable relationships nurture.”
Do the businesses in which you are invested operate in Win-Win relationships with its customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, regulators, and the community in which it operates? Few businesses get perfect scores across the board. But the better a business scores in this regard, the better the chance it has for enduring long into the future.

Today is… National Sewing Machine Day
Yes, this is a real holiday. Do the names Elias Howe or Isaac Singer ring a bell for you? If you’ve taken a Home Ec course (or even worn clothes, for that matter) they should — those two men invented the modern sewing machine. Other inventions get a lot of glory for changing the way we live such as the wheel, the telephone, and the computer. However, the sewing machine is an unsung hero. Without it, we’d still be threading needles and stitching together our clothes by hand.
